Free – High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America

In recognition of Black History Month, Lincoln Theater, Rising Tide Co-Op, and Skidomopha Library invite you to join us for appetizers catered by local business, J & J Jamaican Grocery and Gift Shop, followed by a free screening of “Our Roots,” the first episode in the documentary series “High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America.”
Food writer Stephen Satterfield traces the origins of African American cuisine, tracing its through lines from Africa to Texas. The Hunt for African American food’s roots goes back to Benin, where okra and yam rule the market and pre-enslavement fish and corn plates rule at a table.
We are pleased to welcome Keleen and Peter of J & J Jamaican Grocery and Gift Shop who will be providing free appetizers beginning at 7 PM.
The film screening will begin at 7:30 PM.
