As small town news outlets are closing at a rate of two per week, a case for why it is critical to stem the flow of shut downs is made by Don Colacino in his documentary, Trusted Sources, released on June 1 2024. We are proud to present the first public theatrical screeninig of this game changing film. An introduction to the film will be presented by Sharon Contillo, President of Women in Film. After the film, film critic, Christine Merser, from Screen Thoughts, will do a Q&A with our local newspapers panelists, John C. Roberts of The Lincoln County News, Frederick Freudenberger of The Boothbay Register, Jules Walkup of The Bangor Daily News, and Judy Meyer of The Lewiston Sun Journal.
Trustworthy news has become a scarce resource. As free news goes away it’s replaced by a flood of agenda-driven content disguised as news. “Trusted Sources” shows how we got here, how to find trustworthy news, and ways to protect good journalism. Join Lincoln Theater for a screening of “Trusted Sources,” a new documentary film that focuses on solutions to the problem of disappearing straight news.
“When I met with Don two years ago about his vision, I had no idea how powerful the film would be. It’s a must-see in this political hurricane we are in, and it’s a must-see as we each determine how to cull our incoming news to ensure we are not pawns to corporate greed, those who would have us believe lies, and how focusing on local news outlets might be an answer worth exploring.” – Christine Merser, film critic
Running Time: 1 hour and 6 minutes
John C. Roberts, Lincoln County News
John is the fifth generation of the family to be publisher of The Lincoln County News. He enjoys engaging with the community and is committed to keeping the local newspaper thriving in Lincoln County. Roberts lives in Damariscotta with his wife, Kristen, and two boys, Matthew and Thomas.
Jules Walkup, Bangor Daily News
Jules moved from Tampa, Florida to Harpswell in July 2023 to cover the midcoast for the Bangor Daily News as a Report for America corps member. They graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2022 and have been covering local news for four years.
Fritz Freudenberger, Boothbay Register
Fritz’s career has swung between writing and science. He has been a researcher, instructor, journalist, and science communicator for organizations ranging from small town newspapers to large universities. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Colby College and a master’s in geoscience from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. When he isn’t covering local news, he’s fly fishing, riding a motorcycle, or making repairs to his old farmhouse.
Sharon Contillo serves as President of Women in Film & Video New England, a nonprofit organization and is a board member of WIFT-US. She founded Middle Center Productions, to focus on female-led and family productions highlighting the under-represented, giving all a platform to be seen and heard. She is also an award-winning independent filmmaker and Children’s book author.
Christine Merser, a writer and recent Maine replant, has been a film reviewer for Screen Thoughts for the last ten years. Rated four stars and recently obtained by Spotify as one of their podcast series, Screen Thoughts houses her podcasts with other reviewers from the industry, as well written reviews . “I think that we humans are cemented in our point of view around explosive issues. Stories can change hearts and minds, especially when they are viewed in the darkened theater, without pushing their way into your point of view in a debate over dinner. I love going to the movies.”
Don Colacino – Writer, Producer, and Director
“I make documentary films to bring attention and clarity to important issues of our time. My work focuses on overcoming misinformation, breaking down complex topics into understandable components, and providing historical context. My film “Winner Take All” (2019) followed the debate over Colorado’s National Popular Vote bill. It screened at film festivals nationwide and at League of Women Voters outreach events, aired twice on local PBS, and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.”
(The Filmmaker will not be in attendance at the Lincoln Theater screening of Trusted Sources)
